![]() Over the course of the ’90s, the LJCO augmented their regular concert, touring, and educational activities with international television appearances and special collaborative performances with various symphony orchestras. Still, the LJCO doesn’t treat jazz as a museum exhibit Jazz at Lincoln Center has commissioned a number of new, in-the-tradition works specifically for the group. ![]() Indeed, their annual Ellington concerts have become cultural staples for many New Yorkers, and the group’s first recording - made under Berger’s direction - was 1992’s Portraits of Ellington. Marsalis was hired as the group’s artistic director in 1991 and under his influence the group’s historical bent blossomed, paying particular attention to the Duke Ellington oeuvre. The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra was founded in 1988 and in its early years was often conducted by David Berger. Additionally, the LJCO participates in many Jazz at Lincoln Center educational events (for both advanced and younger students), and records occasionally, both as their own entity and as a backing group for artistic director Wynton Marsalis. The 15-piece orchestra maintains a heavy touring schedule, devoting around six months annually to appearances around the U.S. In the past few years Michael has devoted most of his playing time to the Jump City Orchestra, ( Philadelphia’s hottest jazz ensemble, performing at some of the area’s venerable clubs, including Chris’s Jazz Café, and at private functions in most of the area’s best hotels and other venues.Dedicated to preserving America’s jazz heritage, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra is a key component of New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center program, serving as the highly versatile house band for a wide variety of concert events. Michael has also performed at some of the areas renowned theatres, including, the Society Playhouse and Act II Playhouse. In that time he has performed with numerous different area ensembles, including, The Warminster Symphony Orchestra, Bryn Athyn Orchestra, Bucks County Symphony, Eve Short Penthouse Trio, Jon Lewis Orchestra, and, most notably, a four year run of Friday nights in the Swann Lounge at the Four Seasons Hotel with Karen Wilhelm and the Standard Time Trio. ![]() He also was a member of the Penn State Symphony and numerous other groups and ensembles.Īfter leaving Penn State Michael began his career playing professionally in the Philadelphia area. ![]() While at Penn State Michael studied under renowned jazz educator Dan Yoder and played in the University’s nationally known big band, Centre Dimensions. Over the years, he added several instruments to his repertoire, including, upright and electric bass, drums, bass clarinet and trumpet, before finally choosing to focus his studies on the upright and electric bass at Penn State University. Michael began his career in music at age 5 when his father Ed, (yes, the same Ed Etkins who is a member of the Alan Segal Quartet), started him out on the Eflat clarinet.
